DimPro
Protection against the environmental increasing affects of estrogen, due to the increasing prevalence of estrogens in our environment, (leaking into the food chain from contraceptive pills, plastics, pesticides and other manufacturing processes), the human race has never had such high levels before.
For women and men, increased estrogen levels, apart from affecting sexuality (i.e. reducing sperm counts), can also lead to an increased risk of cancer, in particularly from cervical and prostate cancer. For men, the level of one type of estrogen (estradiol) is an age-increasing bio-maker. For example, did you know that a 59 year old man can have more estrogen in his body than a 54 year old woman?
(If you are interested in estrogen blockers- i.e. substances that help prevent testosterone converting to estrogen, please see Arimidex, Femara). The fact that pseudo estrogens are gaining access to our bodies via our diets and the environment, makes an estrogen detoxifier an important supplement. To find out more about estrogen detoxifiers, (substances to help excrete estrogens and rebalance their ratios- read on:
Jonathan Wright MD spoke at the Monte Carlo Anti-Aging Conference about a clinical trial in which I3C (indole-3-carbinol) remised stage 2 and 3 cervical cancer in nearly 50% of women, within only a 12-week period. He also noted that over 40% of men's prostate problems respond positively to I3C within a similar period. His simple explanation is that I3C and DIM (di-indolylmethane- its more potent relation) convert "bad" estrogen into "good" estrogen.
Therefore, we may conclude that with an increasing amount of estrogen type substances in the food and water supply, that these extracts of DIM and I3C, which are found in the Brassica vegetables (e.g. cabbages, broccoli and Brussel sprouts etc), are important preventative supplements.
Each capsule of DIM-Pro contains 15 mg. of DIM, which is the most active ingredient found in the Brassica family of foods. Because DIM is so much more potent than I3C (about ten times as active), you need much less. DIM is a better choice in other ways too. I3C needs to be "activated" by the digestive tract. It more readily degrades when exposed to air, light, and high temperatures. But DIM does not need to be activated and is much more stable.
Specifically, it appears that the potent circulating estrogen- estradiol is assisted by DIM to be excreted by the liver. (It is believed that estradiol may have carcinogenic properties when its levels become out of balance with the other estrogens or testosterone).
DIM-Pro capsules also contain 10 mg. of lycopene, the powerful, phytonutrient from tomatoes. Each capsule contains the same amount of lycopene that actually shrunk prostate tumors in the men scheduled for prostate surgery.
In addition, DIM-Pro also contains 15 mg. of chasteberry extract, which has been shown to be highly effective in balancing estrogen levels. Chasteberry extract protects progesterone, which aids as a counterbalance to estrogen.
Levels of estradiol have an interest for both women and men. Firstly, hormone replacement therapies involving estrogens are known to increase the risk of cancer. This may be related to the higher prevalence of estradiol, but this risk is also evident for men- because testosterone and other androgens can convert into estradiol, by the action of aromatase. (Note that recent evidence about the risk of prostate cancer is being centred on the levels of estradiol in men, and less upon the actions of DHT).
Dosage: With the additional synergy of ingredients in DIM-Pro, dosages for the majority of healthy/ concerned individuals are one or two capsules 2 or 3 times daily.
Side effects: At high dosages, DIM and I3C may induce flatulence and bloating. To avoid these side-effects always build up to high dosages slowly.
